Do you remember when playing sports was fun?
Over-involved parents, over-scheduled kids, and over-the-top expectations prompted me to question the youth sports culture my kids grew up with. When my daughter tore her ACL, I had to examine the system that has since grown more complex, more expensive, and disheartening for many children.
In 50 Years in the Bleachers—What Modern Sports Parents Can Learn From a Title IX Pioneer, I share my family’s sports stories through my experiences as a coach’s daughter, player, coach’s wife, and sports parent.
Can we refocus the purpose of youth sports on its benefits so more kids can have fun and stay in the game?
I think so. And I believe young parents will be the ones to change the youth sports culture.
